inspiring young people:

There is a way to communicate and relate with young people that causes them to want to grow up to be like you.

There is also a way to relate with young people that causes them to be intimidated and uncomfortable whenever they see a police officer.

Most officers create fear and intimidation and don't even know it. Some officers do very well with certain age groups and are not comfortable with others. For example: Many officers, when they were a teenager, never experienced being comfortable with 13 year-old girls. To this day they find themselves unable to engage in a sustained comfortable conversation with young teen girls. This is called an unacknowledged communication barrier. Such an officer has dozens of unacknowledged, nonverbalized, considerations.

Coaching can facilitate one in completing all of life's unsatisfying interactions and conversations. A D.A.R.E. program officer who is complete causes communication to take place and produces the desired result. The D.A.R.E. Program has been in effect for years at the Pahoa High School yet students still report that 70% of their friends have done drugs and they all believe they know of at least one teacher who smokes marijuana. Many growers and users know of the Big Island police officer, once a fellow grower, who has since become a cop. That such a story is possibly true does not inspire young people.
